If you grew up in Hawai'i, you know it's not a party until someone brings fried saimin! This is a savory and flavorful dish that will help you clean out your fridge and use up your veggies!
Ingredients
Fried Saimin
- 2 packets of saimin noodles of choice, cooked, drained and cooled
- 1/2 a medium onion, cut into thin slices
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 cup cabbage, shredded
- 1/2 cup carrots, shredded
- 1 tablespoon green onions, chopped
- 1 tablespoon liquid aminos
- Optional: Plant-based egg, cooked and cut into thin strips
Plant-based Char Siu
- 1 cup soy curls
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- ½ teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon mirin
- 1 tablespoon liquid aminos
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 2 teaspoons molasses
- 1 tablespoon hot water
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon five spice powder
- ¼ teaspoon white pepper
- 3 cloves finely minced garlic
- Optional: red food coloring or concentrated beet juice for color
Instructions
- Prepare the char siu: Mix all the char siu ingredients except the soy curls in an airtight container until well-combined. Add the soy curls and marinate overnight. When ready, remove soy curls and roast for 20 minutes in a 350° oven or until soy curls start to brown. Note: You can skip this step completely if you want a more tender char siu.
- Heat a pan over medium heat with a bit of oil or veggie broth. Add char siu to the pan and sear for about 5 minutes or until slightly crispy.
- Add the onions, garlic, cabbage, carrots, green onions and plant-based egg to the pan and heat until onions are fragrant and soften up.
- Add the cooked saimin noodles to the pan. Use tongs to ensure the noodles are evenly distributed.
- Add liquid aminos to the noodles and stir to coat everything.
- Turn off the heat, serve and enjoy!
