Memorial Day Recipe Roundup

The season of backyard barbecues and beach cookouts is upon us! But what do you do if you're plant-based? Attending these events can be daunting—will there be something for you to eat? Will the other guests be understanding of your decision?

The biggest and most helpful tip for me has been to bring a dish or two that tastes delicious and just so happens to be plant-based. There's nothing that says your omnivorous friends aren't allowed to enjoy the same food as you, so bring something with lots of flavor. You'd be surprised that these dishes are often the first to run out, so bring plenty!

Here are a few of my go-to party foods that have my friends and family coming back for a second plate:

Watermelon Poke

I love to cook seasonally so when the watermelons come out to play, so does this dish! There's always a bunch of different kinds of poke at my family gatherings, especially during summer. I bring this version to add variety and everyone is always amazed at how much a watermelon can mimic the texture of fish. Watermelon Poke Recipe

Summer BBQ Sandwiches

Summer BBQ Sandwiches

This sandwich is a bit sneaky. It mimics pulled pork and is slathered in BBQ sauce so nobody will think about the fact that they're basically eating roasted veggies. Great way to get those keiki to get their daily serving! Summer MMQ Sandwich Recipe

Sticky BBQ "Ribs"

Who says plant-based pals can't get enough protein? I used tempeh in this recipe because it is packed with protein and creates the perfect "rib" shape. Sticky BBQ "Ribs" Recipe

Mango Macadamia Nut Bread

Warm weather also brings everyone's favorite fruit--mangos! And while they're great on their own, they are spectacular in a quick bread like this! Feel free to add bananas and your favorite nuts to bring more flavor to the party. Mango Macadamia Nut Bread Recipe
